Welcome

BonGoLipi (Bong-Go-Lipi) is a transliteration tool to convert phonetically typed Bengali (Bangla) into text displayable with Unicode or non-Unicode fonts. It supports different transliteration schemes. The objective is to propagate standardized Bengali.

We provide an standalone editor, which is a reference implementation. The editor download information can be found in Editor->Download section. For a limited subset of the editor's transliteration capability, visit the Demo section.

We have more ideas to propagate standardized Bengali on web. If you are a developer or get involved in the project in a non-technical role, please contact us at bongolipi@bongolipi.org.

Bongolipi in Javascript

We are in the process of researching how to make a Firefox/Thunderbird extension for Bongolipi. Only with the Unicode support. As a first step we ported the relevant part of the Java code to Javascript, added some frontend code and have them working. The next step will be to package up the Javascript code, along with some more code, if required, to make it a Firefox/Thunderbird extension.

We haven't released it yet. But may show it as a demo in near future.

Unicode support added

Added Unicode support. With some caveats. Go to Editor -> Download and Installation for the Unoficial release download.

BonGoLipi Editor Released

Released BonGoLipi Editor 1.0 Beta.

Updated demo with new code base to fix a bug.

Major Update

The codebase got a major update. The editor is ready for a beta release. The Demo code has also been updated with two typing schemes. We have also added a few online examples.

Added BanglaPlain font suport

Added support for BanglaPlain font in addition to the default ItxBeng font. In order to do so, changed code to add new font support by adding two font-mapping configuration file.Disabled PDF creation button for now since that's pretty much in unusable state.Another note here is that, the demo hasn't been tested on any platform other that Linux-Firefox. We need extensive testing on Windows-IE (5/6/7). I just did a cursory test to see that the dynamic font is working ok on that platform.

UI Change

Changed demo to load bengali in iframe so that the whole page does not travel over the wire.

New Demo Version Uploaded

I have uploaded a new version of the demo

  1. Use of FCKEditor as the default editor instead of a textarea element
  2. new features
    1. save bengali locally
    2. save roman locally
    3. create PDF (not properly implemented yet)
  3. some bug fixes in engine
  4. reformatting of the page
  5. reconfiguration of webapp
